Audra McDonald is unparalleled in the range and variety of her work as acting and singing. Audra McDonald, who won Six Tony Awards in a row and two Grammy Awards in 2015 was recognized as one of Times magazine's 100 Most Influential People. The president Barack Obama also awarded her the National Medal of Arts -the most prestigious honor bestowed to Americans for excellence in this area. McDonald is from Fresno California, where she was raised by a clan of musicians. In the Juilliard School in New York City, McDonald received training as a classical singer. The year 1994 was the year following her graduation from Juilliard School, she won the Tony Award for "Best Performance by a Leading Actress in the Musical" for her performance in Carousel. After four years, she took home two additional Tony Awards for the category of featured actress. She was in Broadway premieres Terrence McNally's musical Ragtime as well as Terrence McNally's show Master Class in 1996. The result was an astonishing amount of three Tony Awards by the time she was 30. In 2004 she was in the running for a fourth Tony Award, starring in A Raisin in the Sun together with Sean Diddy Combs. And the year 2012 was when her five-year-old daughter received her first Tony in the category of Leading Actress. Her portrayal as Billie Holiday at Emerson's Bar & Grill, the role that was also the catalyst for her Olivier Award nominated debut on London's West End in 2017, earned her the six Tony Awards. In addition, she set records for the highest number of award wins by an actor. McDonald's theater credits also includes The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (99) Henry IV (2005) 110 in the Shade (2006) Twelfth Nacht (2009) the latter of which was the Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut, Shuffle Along or the Making of the Musical sensation of 1921 & All That Followed (2017) Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune (2018) as well as Ohio State Murders 2023. It was the Peabody Award-winning CBS show Having Our Say The Delany Sisters The First 100 Years which first introduced McDonald to television audiences in her role as a dramatic performer. The year 1999 saw her appeared alongside Kathy Bates in ABC's acclaimed remake of Annie. She also had an occasional role in NBC's Law & Order Special Victims Unit in 2000. In the wake of receiving her debut Emmy nomination for her role in the HBO film version of the Pulitzer prize-winning play Wit, produced by Mike Nichols and starring Emma Thompson McDonald returned on television network in 2003 in the political drama Mister Sterling, produced by Emmy Award winner Lawrence O'Donnell Jr. and with Josh Brolin. The actress joined The Bedford Diaries on the WB show The Bedford Diaries in early 2006. In the following season, she appeared as in a role that was recurring on the NBC Television show Kidnapped. McDonald earned her 4th Emmy nomination in her part in HBO's film special of Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill in the year 2016. The Bite is a drama with six episodes based on the spread of a disease, and produced with Spectrum Originals & CBS Studios. She starred with Taylor Schilling & Steven Pasquale. First appearing in the role of U.S. attorney Liz Lawrence in 2009 on CBS's civil drama The Good Wife in 2018 McDonald reprised her character (now being dubbed Liz Reddick) as a season regular of The Good Fight on Paramount+ getting three Critics Choice Award nominations for her performance. She currently guest-stars in Julian Fellowes's historical thriller The Gilded Age on HBO.
